About

Emma Burnett is an artist from Norwalk, Iowa. She graduated from Cornell College with a BA in Studio Art and Applied Psychology in 2023. Currently, she is a Resident Artist at the Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She lives with her high school sweetheart and their cat, Gertrude, one of her family’s foster ‘fails’.

Emma primarily creates ceramic sculptures of animals built from a single slab of clay. The sculptures are treated as canvases, using underglazes to bring whimsy and surprise to these recognizable and repeatable forms. Animals are her form of choice because of the close relationships she has had with them all her life. Throughout times of stress or hardship, animals have been there to offer relief. Emma hopes that viewers receive a similar sense of comfort from her artwork as she has received from the natural world throughout her life.

WaddleWorks art is made with the goal of creating whimsy and joy. As someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression, Emma knows how important it can be to find little things to make you happy when everything else around you can feel so heavy and scary. Color is a big part of meeting this goal, as it allows people to reunite with their sense of childhood wonder. Emma feels she has succeeded if her work can put a smile onto people’s faces. She hopes that her sculptures, when displayed inside people’s homes, will offer a brief moment of respite from the stresses of the world.
